Mit Vernderungen auf dem Buchmarkt ging in der ersten Hlfte des 19. Jahrhunderts der sprunghafte Anstieg der bersetzungsliteratur einher. Deutsche Ausgaben der aktuellen Werke Victor Hugos, dem Wortfhrer der franzsischen Romantik, waren vielerorts erhltlich. Auch Georg Bchner wurde von Karl Gutzkow und dem Verleger Johann David Sauerlnder in den Kreis der Mitarbeiter an einer deutschen Gesamtausgabe von Hugos Werken berufen. Er bersetzte die beiden neuesten Dramen,Lucrce Borgia (1833) undMarie Tudor (1834), die Hugo speziell fr diePorteSaintMartin, dem fhrenden Theater im melodramatischen Umfeld desBoulevard du Crime, konzipiert hatte. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht den Spuren nach, die Hinweise auf Bchners Beweggrnde geben, und versucht eine Einordnung der bersetzerischen Leistung Bchners unter Bercksichtigung von weiteren zeitgleichen bersetzungen der beiden Dramen.
