Mit Jesus als zentraler Figur vermittelte der Religionsunterricht auf der Grundschule (18211825) hauptschlich Lehren, die die Liebe zu den Armen ebenso frderten wie sie die Ablehnung der Reichen untersttzten. Auf dem Gymnasium (18251831) verschob sich der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt des Religionsunterrichts auf Bibelfestigkeit und protestantischen Heroismus im Sinne Luthers. Bchners Aufnahme dieser Lehren wird aus seinen Gymnasialschriften ersichtlich. Sie hallt am lautesten aus dem politischen Flugblatt Der Hessische Landbote (1834), insbesondere aus dem Programm der Gesellschaft der Menschenrechte (1834), aus seinen Dramen wie auch aus seinem Novellenfragment Lenz (1836).
