The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco [Published Date: 1989]. Soft cover, 71 pp. Catalog of an exhibition shown at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 28 January26 March 1989; organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Illustrations, some in color. Introduction by Steven A. Nash; Chronology, Selected Bibliography. [From Preface] In the year of the bicentennial anniversary of the French Revolution, The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are proud to join the roster of American institutions celebrating French art and culture with our exhibition of the great romantic painter Theodore Gericault. This show presents a survey of Gericault's full career, from some of his earliest known paintings, to his brilliant military compositions and studies for the monumental Raft of the Medusa, to his late, brooding landscapes and remarkably modern Portrait of an Insane Woman. By including drawings, prints, and paintings and a representation of virtually all of his major thematic preoccupations, the exhibition demonstrates his technical mastery of different media and shows the historical impact of his work as interpretation of contemporary life in powerful, dramatic terms new to the history of art. Although he died young and produced relatively few large, finished paintings, the influence of his artistic vision on subsequent generations was immense. The present exhibition, purposefully limited in scale, is selected to show Gericault at his very highest level.
