Die deutsche Tischgesellschaft ist ein wichtiges literatur und gesellschaftshistorisches Ereignis der preuischen Reformzeit, des frhen deutschen Nationalismus und Antisemitismus. Die Geschichte der von Achim von Arnim (17811831) am 18. Januar 1811 (mit der Untersttzung Adam Mllers) gestifteten Vereinigung wird in der vorliegenden Untersuchung zum ersten Mal auf der Grundlage des gesamten Handschriftenmaterials dargestellt. Hochrangige Persnlichkeiten der Berliner Gesellschaft Knstler und Intellektuelle wie Brentano, Adam Mller, Ministerialbeamte wie Staegemann und Beuth, Universittsgelehrte wie Fichte, Schleiermacher und Savigny, Militrs wie Clausewitz vereinigten sich in der Tischgesellschaft, um sich beim gemeinsamen Mahl durch Tischreden unterhalten zu lassen und sich ber die politische Situation Preuens zu verstndigen. In der Tradition romantischer Geselligkeit schloss man die Philister aus, als demonstrative Haltung gegen die soziale Integration der jdischen Bevlkerung nahm der Verein nicht einmal getaufte Juden auf. In auf schreckliche Weise brillanten satirischen Abhandlungen Brentanos und Arnims wurden diese Ausschlusskriterien ausfhrlich begrndet. Als positives ideologisches Band diente der Tischgesellschaft der preuischdeutsche Patriotismus und der Hass auf die napoleonische Besatzungsmacht. Vor den Befreiungskriegen vertraten die Tischgenossen einen preuischen Nationalismus, sie verstanden sich als eine Ersatzffentlichkeit, die sich in Treue zum Knigshaus dem Verfall des Hohenzollernstaates entgegenstemmte. Die zahlreichen berlieferten Tischreden geben darber hinaus Zeugnis ab von einem erfolgreichen Kulturprogramm, bei welchem als nationales Identifikationsangebot der Kult um die Klassiker Goethe und Schiller im Vordergrund steht.
