Die Sirat Baibars, der Volksroman um den legendaren Begrunder des Mamlukensultanats Baibars I. (reg. 658 676 H./1260 1277 A.D.), die bis in die sechziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts in den Kaffeehausern Syriens und Agyptens mundlich vorgetragen wurde, offnet uns ein Fenster in die Vorstellungswelten der 'amma, des gemeinen Volkes, in mamlukischer und osmanischer Zeit. Ausgehend von einer fur die Entwicklungsgeschichte der Sira zentralen Episode verfolgt die Studie eine doppelte Strategie: sie prasentiert und interpretiert das zu Tage tretende Imaginaire und versucht zugleich, die Quellen, aus denen sich die Vorstellungswelt der Sirat Baibars speist (erlebte Wirklichkeit, populare Erzahltradition und gelehrte Quellen), sowie die Entwicklung dieses Volksromans vom Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts bis ins 19. Jahrhundert zu rekonstruieren. Aus der Interpretation des Imaginaire von Raum und Gesellschaft, der Analyse der von den Autoren der Sira verfolgten Legitimationsstrategie mamlukischer Herrschaft im Kontext fruhmamlukischer Politik und der Untersuchung des Verhaltnisses von gelehrter Geschichtsschreibung und Volksroman entsteht das Panorama der imaginaren Welten einer in ihrem Innern von Korruption und Verfall bedrohten und von aussen von Feinden umzingelten Gesellschaft. Die Studie, die zugleich eine detaillierte Theorie der Entstehung der Sirat Baibars entwickelt, hat auch insofern Pioniercharakter, als erstmalig eine Konkordanz des Inhalts aller bekannten Handschriften eines arabischen Volksromans erstellt wird.
