Diese mit dem Systembegriff operierende Theorie der Gesellschaft beansprucht universelle Geltung ohne jedoch Anspruch darauf zu erheben, die einzig richtige Theorie anzubieten. (vgl. Leschke 2003:215). D.h. sie will Erklrungsleistungen fr alle Gesellschaftsbereiche erbringen knnen. Sie ist mit anderen medientheoretischen Modellen (wie etwa Einzelmedienontologien oder generellen Medienontologien) nicht kompatibel; jedoch lassen sich die medientheoretischen Erkenntnisse der Systemtheorie mhelos mit anderen systemtheoretischen Erklrungsleistungen auerhalb des Bereichs der Medien verknpfen. Luhmanns Systemtheorie ist nicht historisch ausgerichtet (wie etwa Kittlers 'Medienarchologie' oder McLuhans technikdeterministische Auffassung von Geschichte [Mediengenealogie]). Luhmann verwehrt sich gegen die seines Erachtens irrige Annahme, man knne die "Einheit der Gesellschaftsgeschichte [...] als Unterscheidung von Epochen rekonstruieren." (Niklas Luhmann im Folgenden NL 1998:422) Sein Evolutionsbegriff (auf Gesellschaft angewandt) verwendet ein zirkulr operierendes Unterscheidungsschema von Variation /Selektion / Restabilisierung, das keine Kausalerklrungen fr gesellschaftliche Entwicklung zulsst.
