Bereits in den 1970er Jahren gab es einen Trend zum Jogging, einer Sportart, die jeder ohne groe Aufwendungen und Hilfsmittel ausben kann. Im Jahr 1980 gab es in Deutschland bereits 1000 Fitnessstudios, in denen ca. 370.000 Mitglieder trainierten (Deutscher Sportbund e.V. 2000 zitiert nach Dreler 2002: 44). Zum Jahresende 2001 trainierten bereits 5.400.000 Mitglieder in 6500 Fitnessstudios (Deutscher Sportbund e.V. zitiert nach Deloitte&Touche GmbH: 2006: 5, vgl. auch Rtten et al. 2005: 17). Der starke Anstieg der Mitgliederzahlen impliziert, dass immer mehr Menschen an der Gesunderhaltung ihres Krpers interessiert sind. Weiterhin wird damit die These akzeptiert, dass jeder selbst fr seine Gesundheit und Fitness verantwortlich sei. Heutzutage ist der Gesundheitssport wie Nordic Walking, Aquafitness und Yoga fr einen breiten Bevlkerungsanteil interessant, um das eigene krperliche, geistige und soziale Wohlbefinden zu erhalten bzw. wiederherzustellen und somit auch prventiv gegen die Entstehung von modernen Zivilisationskrankheiten zu wirken (Albers 2002: 142). Insgesamt hat der Anteil der Bevlkerung, der Sport treibt, durch alle Altersgruppen hinweg zugenommen (Wasmer und Haarmann 2006: 530). Gesundheit und die Beschftigung damit ist nach Bauch als ein wichtiges Merkmal von modernen Gesellschaften zu verstehen (Bauch 1996: 9). Denn eine Gesellschaft kann nur bestehen, wenn die Bevlkerung gesund ist und somit die Erfllung der sozialen Rollen gegeben ist (Siegrist 1995 zitiert nach Wolf und Wendt 2006: 12).
