Product DescriptionTim, a reluctant reader, becomes excited about a reading assignment when his teacher lets Tim illustrate his own bookFrom School Library JournalKGr 3Three didactic titles that attempt to explain the roles of teacher, school custodian, and bus driver respectively. In the first book, teacher Paul Summers realizes that one of his students has a problem. Tim, a talented artist, states I hate reading,'' and so Paul suggests What if you could read a book you wroteand, of course, add your own illustrations.'' It's all too simple, too predictable, and frankly too boring. In Trash and Treasure, custodian Earl Mason spends much of his time locating children's lost lunch pails, hats, and lockets, and giving school assemblies on recycling. Little information is given about the cleaning of the building, the trash pickup, the yard or ground work, temperature control, or any of the other general maintenance duties. In Up a Tree, bus driver Carmen Alvarez transports both children and animals to school for a pet show. When a tiger cat escapes from its carrier and gets out the open bus door, the woman uses her twoway radio to contact the fire department to get the feline out of the tree. As with the other titles, this tale is too contrived and tries too hard to develop suspense when there isn't any. Cushman's averagequality, penandink and watercolor artwork can't redeem these overly earnest efforts.Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IACopyright 1995 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
