Long before the Interstate and rail system connected Northern Illinois to the world, people moved things by water. Rivers were the best option, but where rivers didn't flow, man dug canals to get where they needed to go. Towns popped up along these waterways as men and their families needed places to live while the canals were built. Some men died in construction accidents. Some died in labor disputes. But life went on. History moved forward. The centuries turned. Some of those people hung around long after they were gone from the physical world.
