Giardia intestinalis, es un parasito protozoario primitivo, ampliamente distribuido en todo el mundo, afecta principalmente a nios y a personas que viajan a las zonas endmicas, causando trastornos gastrointestinales. Aproximadamente 200 millones de personas en todo el mundo estn infectadas con Giardia intestinalis y segn la OMS cada ao la cifra se incrementa con 500,000 casos.
