From Library Journal Here is another of those occasional selfcelebrations that all art museums publishusually as development piecesfeaturing artworks spanning centuries, continents, and media. Philadelphia's example, issued in conjunction with an exhibition, features threepage essays by a trustee, the director, and the director of programs, all on the theme of giving. Each art object receives a 100 to 150word description (occasionally supplemented in the checklist at the back). Although the 200 objects run the gamut, the gifts do reflect Philadelphia's interest in Modernism and its own Colonial past. Among the works featured are paintings by Andrew Wyeth and Jacob Lawrence, contemporary fashion items, a Japanese scroll, and samples of Philadelphia cabinetry. It is hard to know what longterm use the book will have, as the entries are brief and lacking in scholarly detail and the objects have in common only their time of arrival in the museum. On a positive note, however, the paper/cloth price difference reflects reality, for once.
