En el presente libro se trata de abordar el esudio de toda una serie de smbolos que tienen una presencia recurrente en varios autos de Gil Vicente, y que confluyen de manera muy especial en sus tres "Autos das Barcas". Smbolos o alegoras, de origen muy antiguo, como la Danza de la Muerte, la Barca de Caronte, el Loco, el Viaje a las Islas de los Bienaventurados... tienen una importtantsima repercusin en la obra vicentina; naqu son estudiados no slo atendiendo a su origen (literario, artstico, cultural) del que proceden, sino, sobre todo, al significado que cada uno de ellos adquiere, dentro de su contexto, en el conjunto de la obra vicentina. Gil Vicnte supo combinar, al crear su obra literaria, diversas fuentes literarias y artsticas, desde textos litrgicos o sacros hasta poesa profana, aparte de beber abundantemente en las fuentes artsticas medievales o renacentistas, e incluso en la iconografa del arte popular. All encontr reflejada toda una serie de motivos que se repiten en su obra teatral, adquiriendo significados, a veces novedosos, cuya amplitud y riqueza tratamos de investigar en este libro.
