Die Theorie der Universalitt des Menschenrechtskonzepts wird von den Vereinten Nationen sowie von vielen Regierungen und Nichtregierungsorganisationen untersttzt; dennoch ist sie nicht unumstritten: Die These des Kulturrelativismus betrachtet das Menschenrechtskonzept der Vereinten Nationen als Wertekonstrukt, das in einem bestimmten Kulturkreis verankert ist, und verneint die Legitimation einer Universalisierung dieses Konstruktes. In diesem Zusammenhang wird der UNO und besonders den westlichen Staaten unterstellt, dass sie mit der Idee der Menschenrechte eine Art Werteimperialismus betreiben, um eigene politische Machtansprche zu sichern. Dieser Einspruch wird wiederum kritisiert mit dem Argument, dass der Kulturrelativismus die Politik repressiver Regime begnstige und von deren Menschenrechtsverletzungen ablenken wolle. Die zentrale Fragestellung der Arbeit lautet daher: Inwieweit ist das Konzept der Menschenrechte mit davon abweichenden kulturellen Traditionen vereinbar? Kann oder darf es Subjekt der Modifizierung sein, um sich einzelnen kulturellen Traditionen anzupassen? Oder mssten vielmehr die jeweiligen kulturellen Traditionen, die nicht mit dem Menschenrechtskonzept vereinbar sind, angepasst und modifiziert werden? Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt zunchst das Konzept universell gltiger Menschenrechte vor und schliet daraufhin eine Diskursanalyse der beiden kontrren Theorien des Universalismus und des Kulturrelativismus an.
