Denn nach Dr. Larchs Ansicht sollte jede Frau, die nach SaintClouds gekommen ist, die freie Entscheidung haben darber, was sie will: eine Abtreibung oder eine Waise. Sankt Larch wei, dass sein Jnger Arzt und Abtreiber wider Willen SaintClouds verlassen wird. Auch eine Waise muss whlen knnen. Doch Homer hat mit Melony, dem tyrannischen Schlgerweib aus der Mdchenabteilung, die ihn in die Sexualitt einfhrt, einen Pakt abgeschlossen: Solange ich bleibe, bleibst auch du, Sonnenstrahl. Homers Weg fhrt ihn zu den paradiesischen Apfelgrten von Ocean View, wo er die Freundschaft und die Freiheit kennenlernt, den Lobster, die Regeln der Apfelpflcker, das Bse und wozu DriveinKinos da sind, wie man pfel erntet und was es heit, sich zu verlieben. Doch das Unglck erreicht auch Ocean View (und nicht nur in der Gestalt der rachschtigen Melony). Whrend in SaintClouds ein alternder Dr. Larch immer fter in therruschen und in der fiktiven Welt seines Miszellenjournals Zuflucht sucht und ber Pearl Harbor die Bomben niedergehen, befindet sich Homer bereits auf dem Weg, der ihn unweigerlich zurckfhrt nach SaintClouds.
