Wegen ihrer zentralen Lage musste die Inselgruppe im Verlauf der Geschichte eine Vielzahl von Besetzungen ber sich ergehen lassen: Phnizier, Rmer, Vandalen, Byzantiner, Araber, Normannen, Staufer und Spanier waren hier, ehe der Johanniterorden 1530 in Malta angesiedelt wurde. Fr kurze Zeit herrschten dann die Franzosen und schlielich ab 1801 die Briten. Erst 1964 wurde der Staat Malta in die Unabhngigkeit entlassen und ist seit Mai 2004 Mitglied der EU. In all dieser Zeit hat Gozo erfolgreich versucht, sich eine gewisse Eigenstndigkeit gegenber der greren Schwester Malta zu erhalten. Wer heute nach Gozo kommt, kann vielleicht das Besondere dieser Insel noch spren: die traditionellen Steinhuser, die terrassierten Hgel und nicht zuletzt die offenen und gastfreundlichen Einwohner. Hier in Gozo gehen die Uhren langsamer als anderswo. Wer das nicht mag, kommt nie wieder. Fr diejenigen aber, die dem Zauber dieser Insel erlegen sind, die sich wnschen, wieder zu kommen und womglich zu bleiben, fr all diejenigen ist dieses Buch geschrieben. Es erzhlt, wie es den frheren Einwohnern seit den Phniziern ergangen ist und macht Gestalten wie den trkischen Seeruber Dragut oder Napoleons General Reynier durch den Nebel der Geschichte noch einmal sichtbar. Und es erzhlt auch, was einem Auslnder, der sich hier niederlsst, Heiteres und weniger Heiteres widerfahren kann. About the Author Helmut Frick lebt als Rentner zeitweise auf Gozo und hat sich intensiv mit der Insel und ihrer Geschichte auseinander gesetzt. Nebenbei hat er auch Geschichten erlebt, die zu erzhlen er sich nicht verkneifen konnte.
