This book is the first detailed study of Polish composer Henryk Grecki, whose Third Symphony, written in 1976 and released on CD in 1992, became a bestseller and brought Goreki international renown. Written by a leading enthusiast of Greckis music, this volume ranges from the composers large orchestral scores (Sconti, Refrain, the Symphonies) and choral works (Beatus Vir, commissioned by and dedicated to Pope John Paul II) to the more modest church songs and folksong arrangements. Granted numerous interviews and access to unpublished material, the author discusses Greckis position as leader of the Polish avantgarde in the late 1950s, and his subsequent discovery of the folk and church music of Old Poland, most notably that of the Podhale region in southern Poland. The book includes a complete list of works since 1955 with details of instrumentation and recordings, and a select bibliography.

The content in the Grecki Oxford Studies is quite focused on specific composers, which is great but also made it feel a bit niche. I enjoyed the detailed analysis, but I wish there were a few more broader discussions included. Good for experts, maybe less so for casual readers.

Disappointing experience
The book arrived with a few pages crumpled, and although the information is good, it was hard to enjoy reading due to the damage. I feel like I should have received a better copy for the price.

Informative but a bit dense
This book offers a wealth of information about various composers, but sometimes it feels a bit heavy to get through. I appreciate the thoroughness, but a lighter writing style might have made it easier to digest. Still, a valuable resource for serious music lovers.

Not what I expected
I was hoping for a more general overview of composers, but this book is quite specialized and delves deep into technical aspects. It's interesting, just not what I was looking for. Might be more suited for advanced students.

Great insights into composers
The Grecki Oxford Studies of Composers is a fantastic read for anyone interested in the deeper aspects of musical composition. I bought it for my music studies class, and it has really enriched my understanding with its detailed analysis. Would definitely recommend it to fellow students!
