The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive listing with current prices for the Marklin HO Gauge. We include those variations which have been authenticated. In a few cases we ask our readers for further information where data is missing or doubtful. Values are reported for each item where there have been reported sales. Robert P. Monaghan, the curator of the Marklin Museum of Philadelphia, has spent a lifetime enjoying and studying Marklin trains. Born in Philadelphia in the early 1930's, Monaghan remained in the area and opened several businesses over the years, including a funeral home and limousine sales company. Even as a youngster, Monaghan appreciated the fine craftmanship of German toys. Although the Monaghan family trains were Lionel, Mongahan's boyhood floor trains were windup Marklin models. This early exposure to Marklin aroused his enthusiasm to later build a 20 x 30 foot layout. One Christmas he opened his display to the neighborhood children, and, from that modest beginning, attendance has grown to 2,800 people per year. Monaghan recognized that Marklin quality and dependable performance were very special in the world of model trains. Consequently he introduced Marklin trains to the selective customers of his limousine company. Eventually, Monaghan established Big Boys Toys, a retail outlet for the sale of new and antique Marklin trains. Big Boys Toys developed a worldwide clientele, making it apparent to Monaghan the need for a sophisticated guide to Marklin trains written in English. Book published 1989.
