Dank der Arbeit vieler Psychiater und Kunsthistoriker, dem revolutionren Umdenken in der Psychiatrie und dem Engagement zahlreicher Knstler gewinnt die Kunst der psychisch Kranken immer mehr an Akzeptanz und Bedeutung. Authentizitt und Nonkonformismus werden als besondere Qualittsmerkmale herausgestrichen, die professionelle Knstler nachzuahmen versuchen. Dabei widmen sie sich paradoxerweise knstlerischen Alternativen, die nicht den anerkannten Normen entsprechen und ben so nicht nur Kritik an der kulturellen Kunst, sondern stellen sich auch selbst in Frage. Neue therapeutische und medikamentse Behandlungen und soziale Einrichtungen werfen allerdings die Frage auf, ob das Phnomen der Kunst von psychisch Kranken in der heutigen Gesellschaft berhaupt noch zeitgem ist. Die Ursprnglichkeit von Werken, die in psychiatrischen Institutionen der Gegenwart entstehen, wird von zahlreichen Theoretikern und Knstlern bereits eifrig diskutiert und auch das Aufkommen der Kunst als Therapieform spricht gegen das Argument des spontanen, unbeeinflussten Kunstschaffens.
