Hans Ludwig Held wurde am 1. August 1885 in Neuburg an der Donau als Sohn des Archivoffizianten Marcellus Held geboren. 1904 verlie er nach nur sieben Schuljahren das Mnchner Ludwigsgymnasium und trat bei der Kniglichen Haupt und Residenzstadt Mnchen in den Mittleren Verwaltungsdienst. 1909 legte er die Stadt und Marktschreiberprfung ab. In dieser Zeit begann er mit dem Schreiben und der Verffentlichung von Gedichtbnden, Tragdien und Romanen. 1911 grndete er zusammen mit Thomas Mann und Frank Wedekind den Schutzverband deutscher Schriftsteller. 1919 zog er fr die Unabhngige Sozialistische Partei Deutschlands (USPD) in den Mnchner Stadtrat ein, fand aber knapp zwei Jahre spter sein eigentliches Bettigungsfeld: Am 3. Januar 1921 trat er sein Amt als Stadtbibliothekar an, das er insgesamt zwanzig Jahre innehatte von 1921 bis 1933 und von 1945 bis 1953. In dieser Zeit hat er nicht nur das Mnchner Bibliothekswesen, sondern die gesamte kulturelle Entwicklung der Stadt mageblich mitbestimmt.
