Los ltimos dos siglos de existencia del Imperio Romano conforman sin duda un periodo apasionante, poblado de grandes cambios a todos los niveles y una inestabilidad creciente. Para completar el panorama de tales aos convulsos se analizan tanto la usurpacin de Magnencio (350353) como las batallas ms importantes del periodo, Mursa (351), y Estrasburgo (357). Se ofrece tambin un estudio del Ejrcito Romano de Occidente y una visin general de los problemas defensivos contra los brbaros,examinando la estructura y disposicin de la frontera romana en el Rin y tratando de mostrar las razones por las que tales defensas resultaron ineficaces durante las Grandes Invasiones germnicas del siglo V.
