Este trabajo est centrado en los logros militares de uno de los ltimos grandes generales romanos, Flavio Claudio Juliano, posteriormente conocido como "el Apstata", que actu como Csar en la Galia de 355 a 361, en un mandato permanentemente marcado por la difcil relacin con su superior y pariente el Augusto Constancio II. Para completar el panorama de tales aos convulsos se analizan tanto la usurpacin de Magnencio (350353) como las batallas ms importantes del periodo, Mursa (351), y Estrasburgo (357). Se ofrece tambin un estudio del Ejrcito Romano de Occidente y una visin general de los problemas defensivos contra los brbaros,examinando la estructura y disposicin de la frontera romana en el Rin y tratando de mostrar las razones por las que tales defensas resultaron ineficaces durante las Grandes Invasiones germnicas del siglo V.
