The Great Western Railway 4073 Class, or Castle Class locomotives were the pride of the GWR when introduced in the mid1920s, and were heralded as Britains mostpowerful express passenger locomotives. 171 Castles were built or converted between 1923 and 1950, and eight preserved examples survive today.

As a train enthusiast, I really enjoyed this guide from GWR. The history of the Castle Class locomotives is presented in a captivating way, and the manual offers great insights into their operation. It’s a perfect read for anyone interested in vintage steam trains!

Arrived damaged, not impressed
I was really looking forward to this manual about the Castle Class, but it arrived with a dented cover. The content seems interesting, but I can’t get past the fact that it was damaged in shipping. Disappointed with the packaging!

Informative but a bit dry
This book by GWR is packed with information about the Castle Class, but I felt some sections were a bit too technical. For casual readers, it might be a little heavy. Still, it's a solid resource for rail history fans. Just be ready for some dense passages!
