Bei dem Begriff geteilte Stadt' denkt man zurck an Berlin, aber weder an Hamburg noch an eine andere deutsche Stadt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird erlutert, wie es zu dieser Fragestellung kam. Die Stadt im Kopf', ein Seminar am Institut fr Volkskunde, stellte Muster der Wahrnehmung von Urbanitt und das Arbeiten mit Mental Maps als eine Form, sich den Vorstellungen von urbanem Raum und stdtischem Leben auf unmittelbare Weise anzunhern, vor. Die Vermutung, dass Stadtwahrnehmung und ihre Wiedergabe in Mental Maps von der persnlichen Lebenssituation und Erfahrung abhngig ist, wurde anschlieend in einer Hausarbeit berprft. Das Seminar Kulturwissenschaftliche Stadtforschung' bot neue Aspekte der Stadt(er)forschung. Es wurde klar, dass bei der alten' Hausarbeit wie selbstverstndlich nur Menschen zu ihrem Stadtbild befragt wurden, die auf der Nordseite der Elbe lebten. Die Ausblendung des Hamburger Sdens in der berwiegenden Zahl der Mental Maps erschien uns Forscherinnen damals berhaupt nicht bemerkenswert oder diskussionswrdig, weil wir selber ein deutlich eingeschrnktes Stadtbild hatten: Auch unsere Wahrnehmung schloss den Sden aus! Aus diesen Beobachtungen ergab sich fast von selbst die Frage, ob die Menschen in den sdlich der Elbe gelegenen Stadtteilen ihre Stadt ganz anders oder hnlich wie die NordHamburgerInnen sehen. Mir erschien Hamburg durch die Grenze' Elbe nun als so etwas wie eine geteilte Stadt. Das herauszufinden ist Thema der Magisterarbeit geworden, die folgende Inhalte hat: Theorie ber Mental Maps (Bedeutung, Anwendungsgebiete und Eignung speziell auf dem Gebiet der Stadtforschung) Ein historischer Abriss der sdlichen Teile Hamburgs Einblick in die Materialgewinnung damals und heute Forschungsverlauf Ergebnisse der Forschung (Auswertung der Mental
