Most books catalog patterns either by motif or historical period. This handbook takes a different approach by revealing the structural anatomy of patterns, showing how they are generated and how their parts interrelate. It demonstrates how designers and artists, whether students or professionals, can play limitless variations upon a few fundamental patterns and structural arrangements. The book explores these configurations step by step, starting with simple symmetries of mirror reflections, rotations, translations, and glidereflections, building to point groups and the seven distinct band or linear arrays, and culminating in the seventeen fullfledged wallpaper patterns. A concluding chapter presents a visual synopsis of the basic patterns. The author, whose own designs are included here, is a registered architect, practicing artist, and author of Patterns in Nature.

I recently picked up the 'Handbook of Regular Patterns' and it’s a must-have for anyone interested in symmetry. The explanations are clear and the illustrations really help visualize the concepts. This book has become my go-to for understanding two-dimensional patterns better!

Useful for Art Projects
I bought this book to help with my art studies, and it’s been quite handy. The sections on symmetry are detailed and provide lots of examples. However, I wish there were more color illustrations; some of the patterns can be a bit hard to visualize in grayscale. Still, a good purchase!

Decent Reference but Needs More Depth
I picked up the Handbook of Regular Patterns for some self-study. It covers the basics nicely, but I found some sections lacking in depth. It’s good for quick references but could have included more complex examples. Not a bad buy, just not quite what I was hoping for.

Mixed Feelings About This Book
While the 'Handbook of Regular Patterns' has great information on symmetry, I found the layout a bit cluttered at times. Some sections were tough to follow without prior knowledge. Not bad for a reference, but I expected a bit more clarity from the introduction.
