Hlfte des 12. Jahrhunderts bis zur Schlieung des hansischen Kontors durch den moskovitischen Grofrsten Ivan III. Vasilevic im Jahre 1494. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtungen stehen die Vertragspolitik der Hanse mit der Stadt Novgorod, wichtige politische Ereignisse im Untersuchungszeitraum, sowie die Machtverhltnisse der am Russlandhandel beteiligten hansischen Stdte, der Mutter der Hanse" Lbeck, der Stadt Wisby und den livlndischen Stdten Reval, Riga und Dorpat. Wir geben dabei Antwort auf die Frage, wie der Handel trotz unterschiedlicher Sprache, Kultur und anderen Hindernissen nie abriss. Ferner wird die Entwicklung der Stadt Novgorod betrachtet, dabei stehen Entstehung und Struktur der Stadt im Vordergrund. Zustzlich werden die Handelswege zu Lande und zu Wasser untersucht, auf denen die Waren von und nach Novgorod transportiert werden. Zudem wird der Warenimport sowie export einer kritischen Wrdigung unterzogen. Da es kaum Angaben ber absolute Zahlen gibt, steht hierbei nicht der Umsatz oder Gewinn der einzelnen Kaufleute oder der Hanse im Allgemeinen im Vordergrund, vielmehr werden die Ein und Ausfuhrgter auf ihre Bedeutung hin untersucht. Das Erkenntnisinteresse hierbei ist in erster Linie, ob es sich um notwendige Gter des tglichen Bedarfs handelt oder um Luxusgter, die im Alltag nicht zwingend erforderlich sind und ob sich die Bedeutung der Gter im Betrachtungszeitraum ndert.
