The Derbyshire material is firmly and clearly set in the national context of changing attitudes to the various aspects of crime and punishment. The text is enlivened by the very full use of illustrative documentary evidence, most of which has never been previously published. There is illustration from contemporary sources and modern photographs of buildings and artefacts still in existence. Many of the criminal cases quoted were used in the BBC Radio Derby Series 'Records of Crime'.
