Das Werk wird zunchst in den Kontext seiner Zeit gestellt. Im Fokus steht die Wahl des Librettos vor dem Hintergrund der neu einsetzenden KafkaRezeption nach dem 2. Weltkrieg. Danach wird das Werk unter den mglichen Gattungsbezeichnungen Literaturoper" und Funkoper" bzw. Rundfunkoper" diskutiert. Im zweiten Teil werden Beobachtungen zur Komposition angestellt: Form und Struktur werden untersucht (traditionelle Formschemata sowie die zwlftnige Struktur), auerdem die Verwendung von musikalischen Zitaten sowie die funkspezifischen Eigenschaften. Ein Vergleich der beiden, mehr als vierzig Jahre auseinanderliegenden Fassungen der Funkoper bildet den Abschluss der Arbeit.
