Happiness Is No Vague Dream is the story of a strong, intelligent, young woman forced to deal with unexpected and difficult challenges during the turbulent years of 1964 and 1973.At 16, just months after Callie Seymours mother dies, Callie gets pregnant. She wants to keep the baby but no one supports her in this. Her family disowns her. She is sent to a Catholic Home for Wayward Girls in Kansas City, Missouri, where she gives birth. Callie names her baby, Elisabeth. Just before the child is taken away for adoption, a nurse takes her photo and gives it to Callie. The shot captures Elisabeths birthmark, a small strawberryshape on her neck.By 1973, Callie, twentyfour, has put herself through college and become a newspaper reporter. And each year since her daughters birth, Callie has placed a letter into her childs official adoption file in the hopes that they can one day reestablish contact. After writing a controversial expos on immigrants in Kansas City, taking a lifechanging trip to Colombia and falling in love, Callie finally realizes that happiness is no vague dream. It depends on being courageous and persistent, loving your work, and having a clear conscience.
