Jay Gatsby Hauptcharakter von "Der groe Gatsby" lebt an der Oberflche diesen Traum des Geschftsmannes, der scheinbar aus dem Nichts ein Millionenvermgen geschaffen hat und sich und seinen neu erlangten Status auf rauschenden Festen zu zelebrieren scheint. Dennoch ist sein Vermgen, vor allem aber sein sozialer Rang, den er sich in der monetr fixierten amerikanischen Gesellschaft durch das viele Geld aufzubauen hoffte, lediglich eine Illusion. Sein Vermgen ist auf unlauterem Wege entstanden, sein sozialer Rang kann sich somit keineswegs mit dem des U.S.Geldadels messen, dem er so verzweifelt angehren will, um die Liebe seines Lebens fr sich zu gewinnen.
