Many people are aware that 1066 was the date of the Battle of Hastings. It was fought throughout Saturday 14 October and was paramount in forming England's future fate. This book provides an insight into the character of Harold and his opponent William. During his short reign Harold consolidated the defence of his realm only to be asked to defend it against two foreign invaders at opposite ends of the country in three weeks. Illustrated throughout with photographs from the battle site and the Bayeaux Tapestry, the author analyzes the causes of the battle itself and the military strengths and weaknesses of both sides, and completes it with a graphic account of the fighting.
