Seine wissenschaftliche Zuverlssigkeit und der hohe Grad seiner praktischen Benutzbarkeit sind die Ursachen dafr, da es in 176 Jahren seiner Existenz von anderen Wrterbchern nicht hat verdrngt werden knnen. 'Der Gesenius' ist zu einem Begriff geworden.Der Unterschied der 18. gegenber der 17. Auflage besteht hauptschlich darin, da das Wrterbuch auf den gegenwrtigen Stand der hebraistischen und semitistischen Kenntnis gebracht wurde. Die Kunde von den semitischen Sprachen, zu denen das Hebrische und das BiblischAramische gehren, ist seit dem 1. Weltkrieg beachtlich gewachsen; ganz neue Sprachbereiche z.B. das Ugaritische und zahlreiche neue Texte (z.B. die Texte aus den Hhlen am Toten Meer) sind hinzugekommen. Gleichzeitig ist versucht worden, die Vorzge des alten 'Gesenius' (bersichtliche Gliederung der Artikel, relative Ausfhrlichkeit bei der Wiedergabe von Formen und Zitaten mit bersetzung, Benutzungsmglichkeit z.T. auch als Konkordanz) zu bewahren.
