Gleichsam wird auch an den Vater der wissenschaftlichen Metallographie und Pionier der Materialprfungsverfahren, Adolf Martens, sowie seinen wichtigsten Mitarbeiter, Emil Heyn, erinnert. Dies erfolgt aus der Tatsache heraus, da die innovative Metallographie nicht ohne ihre Tradition sein kann und fr ihre Zukunft die Herkunft braucht. Das Buch wird bereichert durch einen Abstract zur Herausbildung der Metallographie sowie den im Schlussteil gegebenen Schrifttumsempfehlungen. Begonnen wird mit den ersten visuellen Betrachtungen von Metalloberflchen sowie Bruchgefgen der Metalle und fhrt ber den Beschau mittels erster optischer Mittel, wie Lesestein, Lupe, Vergrerungsglas, einfacher Mikroskope bis hin zum makroskopischen und mikroskopischen Erschlieen, Identifizieren, Festhalten und Photographieren der wahren Gefge von Eisen, Stahl und anderer Metalle sowie ihrer Legierungen. Eingebunden ist Biographisches zu Sorby, namentlich zu seinem Lebenswerk fr die Wissenschaft, zu seinem Maxime: 'Ziel mu es sein, die Ursachen der Dinge zu entdecken!', aber auch seine Verffentlichungen, Vortrge, Berufungen, Anerkennungen sowie sein institutionelles Engagement.
