Ein Pompejaner hatte diesen Satz vor fast 2000 Jahren niedergeschrieben (Eschebach, 1984, S. 6). Dieser Ausspruch sollte am 24. August 79 n. Chr. widerlegt werden. An diesem Tag wurde Pompeji, die bedeutende Stadt Kampaniens, vollstndig von einem Asche und Lapilliregen des Vesuvs bedeckt und sollte fast zwei Jahrtausende lang vergraben bleiben. 17 Jahrhunderte spter wurde die verlorene Stadt, mehr oder weniger durch Zufall, wiederentdeckt. Plnderungen, falsche Vorgehensweise in der Ausgrabung und mangelnde wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse und Techniken brachten der Stadt Pompeji in den darauf folgenden Jahren der Ausgrabung mehr Schaden als historischen Fortschritt. Heute wird alles versucht den verfallenden Wert der Kunstschtze und der Architektur sowie den Schaden um das verlorene historische Wissen soweit es geht zu reduzieren und einzudmmen. Pompeji gilt seit 1997 als Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO und ist mit 44 Hektar die grte zusammenhngende Stadtruine der Welt (Jens Arne Dickmann, 2005, S. 15). Wie kam es dazu, dass die Stadt nach so vielen Jahren wiederentdeckt wurde? Wie liefen die Freilegungen ab? Welche Rckschlge musste man bei den Ausgrabungen erleiden und wie schafft es eine zu damaligen Zeiten eher unbedeutende Stadt mit 10000 Einwohnern heute mehr als zwei Millionen Besucher jhrlich anzulocken? Diese Fragen sollen in den nachfolgenden Seiten dieser Hausarbeit geklrt werden.
