This thesis evaluates enhancements for the existing global system formobile communications (GSM) data service enhanced data rates for GSMevolution (EDGE). The development goal for further evolution of EDGE is toprovide enhanced maximum data rates. This can only be achieved by applyinghigher order modulation schemes. The therefore evaluated modulationschemes 16 symbol quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and 32QAM willbe compared to 8 symbol phase shift keying (8PSK), which is alreadyemployed for EDGE. All decisive parts of the GSM/EDGE transmission chainwere taken into account with the accomplished simulations anddifferent realizations for the components have been compared.Decisionfeedback equalization algorithms were extensively investigatedby performance with respect to the given scenario and as well by means ofcomplexity. The simulation model is further extended by channel coding, whereconvolutional as well as turbo coding is regarded and compared. A possibleiterative concatenation of equalizer and decoder to turbo equalization isalso examined.
