This book is a glimpse into the city of Hilo as depicted by the old Hilo newspapers. It is a walk through the city as it emerged from a village status into a small city and the second city in Hawaii in the time of the Hawaiian Republic through its transition to a Territory of the United States in 1898. Reported are the problems in the city over getting electric lights, a better water system, fighting with the powers that be in the capital of Honolulu, trying to get proper harbor facilities, establishing better schools, the initial formation of a free kindergarten, the building of new churches and commercial buildings, the breakup of the public lands taken over by the government from the royal government, the selling of lots and farm sites throughout the area, and the set up of the sugar industry, as well as the social activities in the city and surrounding areas.
