Der Hindunationalismus hat eine lange Geschichte hinter sich. Auch das Gesicht des Hindunationalismus hat sich seit seinen Anfngen in den 1920erJahren stark verndert. Das oberste Ziel ist die Schaffung einer HinduNation, die "Hindutva". Ab den 1950erJahren wurde der Hindunationalismus politisch aktiv und verhalf nach anfnglichen Schwierigkeiten der rechten HinduPartei BJP zu beachtlichen Erfolgen. Von 19982004 stellte die BJP die Zentralregierung Indiens, musste aber 2004 wegen verfehlter Wahlkampfthemen die Macht an den Congress abgegeben. Nur im Bundesstaat Gujarat regiert die BJP seit 2001 unangefochten mit Chief Minister Narendra Modi und es scheint, als wrde das noch einige Zeit so bleiben. Diese Arbeit beschftigt sich mit dem Werdegang der BJP, speziell in Gujarat, und die Grnde fr ihren Erfolg. Welche Rolle spielen die indische Moderne, der "communalism" und Nationalismus im Hindunationalismus? Wie sieht die Zukunft fr die BJP und den Hindunationalismus im Zeitalter der Globalisierung aus? Diese und andere Fragen versucht die Autorin anhand von Literaturstudien, empirischer Feldforschung und Interviews zu beantworten.
