Esta Historia econmica mundial utiliza una perspectiva de muy largo plazo (milenios) para entender las grandes transformaciones en la organizacin econmica de las sociedades humanas y estudia la evolucin de la humanidad desde las crisis alimentarias de la prehistoria hasta las nuevas crisis de recursos del siglo XXI. No se ofrece una visin absolutista y nica de la Historia econmica, sino que se presentan las sntesis de las principales interpretaciones existentes sobre los cambios y revoluciones econmicas (neoltica, comercial, militar, financiera, tecnolgica, agraria, industrial) con especial hincapi en los sistemas econmicos (edad de piedra, esclavismo, feudalismo, capitalismo, socialismo), en el crecimiento y en las crisis econmicas. Junto a las interpretaciones tradicionales se presentan las explicaciones ms recientes de los historiadores econmicos, mostrando las discrepancias y las complementariedades entre las mismas. Al explicar los fenmenos econmicos se trata de conjugar distintas interpretaciones y factores explicativos. Geogrficamente se adopta una perspectiva global, considerando las principales economas del planeta (asiticas, americanas, africanas y europeas, haciendo frecuentes referencias a Latinoamrica y Espaa).
