Es wird gezeigt, wie sie zunchst ohne Kontakt mit den hfischen Theaterensembles, der Hofoper und den franzsischen Komdianten, operierten, dann jedoch das Interesse des pflzischen Kurfsten Carl Theodor an ihren Darbietungen weckten. Hieraus resultierten stndig enger werdende Beziehungen zwischen dem Hof und den Wanderbhnen. Sie fhrten in einem zehnjhrigen Proze zur Grndung des heute noch existierenden Nationaltheaters Mannheim. Der Autor hat fr seine Schrift bisher nicht verffentlichte Quellen, so Mannheimer Stadtratsprotokolle aus jener Zeit, erschlossen und Theatergeschichte vor dem Hintergrund von Schauspielkunst, literarischen Tendenzen und Kommerz geschrieben.
