La salinidad es posiblemente el factor ambiental que ms severamente incide en la productividad citrcola en el Mediterrneo, una de las mayores reas productoras de ctricos en el mundo. A diferencia de lo observado en plantas modelo y sistemas herbceos, en los ctricos y otros sistemas leosos existe una alta correlacin entre la acumulacin de cloruro (Cl), ms que de sodio, y los daos asociados a la salinidad. Por tanto, el avance en los conocimientos sobre la homeostasis de Cl en portainjertos de ctricos adquiere gran relevancia desde el punto de vista de la investigacin bsica y por su posible aplicacin agronmica. El trabajo aqu descrito aborda los siguientes aspectos: i) estudio genmicofuncional a la toxicidad por Cl en portainjertos de ctricos; ii) identificacin y caracterizacin molecular de posibles transportadores de Cl; iii) caracterizacin fisiolgica de la homeostasis de Cl y estudio de su posible funcin biolgica en la regulacin del balance hdrico en plantas superiores.
