Book XXII recounts the climax of the Iliad: the fatal encounter between the main defender of Troy and the greatest warrior of the Greeks, which results in the death of Hector and Achilles revenge for the death of his friend Patroclus; but at the same time adumbrates Achilles own death and the fall of Troy. The introduction summarises central debates in Homeric scholarship, such as the circumstances of composition and the literary interpretation of an oral poem, and offers synoptic discussions of the structure of the Iliad, the role of the narrator, similes and epithets. There is a separate section on language, which provides a compact list of the most frequent Homeric characteristics. While the introduction is mainly geared at intermediate and advanced students, the commentary is designed for use by both students and professional classicists: it offers uptodate linguistic guidance, and elucidates narrative techniques, typical elements and central themes.

While I love the text of the Iliad, I was a bit disappointed that this edition didn't have more illustrations or maps. It’s well-translated, but a few visuals would have really enhanced it for my learning. Still, a solid read!

Came damaged, disappointing experience
Unfortunately, the book arrived with some damage on the cover. It’s a shame because I was excited about this edition. I contacted customer service, but it took a while to get a response. Hoping for a better experience next time.

Beautifully printed edition!
I bought this for my son who is studying ancient literature. The print quality is top-notch, making it easy to read. He loves it! I appreciate the hardcover too, it’s going to last through all his classes.

Great edition but shipping could be better
The Iliad itself is amazing—just what I wanted for my literature collection. The only downside was the delivery took longer than I expected, but the book arrived in great condition. Worth the wait!

A must-have for any classics buff!
I've been digging into the Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics series, and the Iliad is a standout. The translation is fluid and really captures the epic's intensity. Plus, the hardcover feels durable, perfect for my bookshelf!
