Ainsi au lieu d'un unique cycle liturgique qui reprenait chaque anne les mmes lectures, l'Eglise a instaur trois annes liturgiques avec un lectionnaire non plus en latin mais dans les langues des peuples auxquels la Parole de Dieu s'adresse: A (saint Matthieu), B (saint Marc) et C (saint Luc) ; l'vangile selon saint Jean tant rparti sur les trois annes. Le concile a prcis que l'homlie, connue aussi sous le nom de sermon, faisait partie intgrante de la liturgie et devait tre un commentaire des textes bibliques.
