In der Regel wird mit diesem Zitat ein Typus von Mensch verbunden, der in jeder Beziehung nur nach Magabe des eigenen Nutzens handelt, keinerlei Interesse an einem wie auch immer gearteten Gemeinwohl hegt und alle Mittel einsetzt, die Bedrfnisse, die Ihn umtreiben, zu befriedigen. Anscheinend notwendige Folge daraus ist ein Krieg aller gegen alle', der sich als permanente Konkurrenz der Individuen um begrenzte Ressourcen, Gter und letztlich um das Leben selbst darstellt.
