First published in England in 1963, a collection of animal stories depicts a world of long ago in which all animals looked alike and considers how some, including the huge seadwelling whale, came to resemble their modernday descendants.

I had high hopes for this book because of the title. However, the stories felt a bit too simplistic, and my kid lost interest halfway through. The illustrations are pretty, but I expected deeper narratives. Disappointed!

Good stories, but some confusion
The stories in this book are nice, but I found some of the themes a bit hard for my daughter to grasp. The illustrations are lovely though, and she likes the whale story a lot. Just wish there were better explanations for some parts.

Charming stories for bedtime
I bought this collection for my kids, and they absolutely love the tale of how the whale became. The illustrations are stunning, and each story is engaging. Perfect for winding down at night!
