In How to Read Bible Stories and Myths in Art, Patrick De Rynck explores the roots of Western civilization from three different angles: He introduces the reader to the bestknown stories from the Bible and mythology; he presents a selection of exquisite masterpieces by some of the worlds greatest painters; and he shows the reader how these painters interpreted these famous scenes.Using the same highly visual approach that made his How to Read a Painting a popular success, De Rynck shows how artists portrayed the main subjects of Western art. Old Masters such as Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, and countless others rendered these stirring, poignant, bloodthirsty, and even erotic tales on panel or canvas, in the process creating a familiar way of visualizing our collective imagination.

Honestly, I was hoping for more straightforward storytelling. The analysis is deep, and it’s clear the author knows their stuff, but I found it hard to grasp at times. It's a lovely book, but I think it’s more suited for art majors than casual readers like me.

Interesting but a Bit Dense
I found the book intriguing, but some sections felt a little heavy and complex. I appreciated the effort to decode the themes in the artwork, but it could be simplified for casual readers. Still, it made for great discussion material with friends!

Beautiful Illustrations, Mixed Feelings
The artwork featured in this book is stunning, but I expected a bit more clarity in the stories being told. A few of the explanations were vague, which left me wanting. Nonetheless, I'm glad I added it to my collection.
