Der Begriff der Hysterie und der Einfluss der psychoanalytischen Schule auf die hofmannsthalsche Elektra wird in fast jedem Sekundrtext erwhnt, sie scheint das Zentrum, ja oft sogar der Schlssel in der Analyse zu sein, einige Kritiker haben diesen Einfluss wiederum bestritten. Diese Diskussion wird hier aufgegriffen und mit Methoden wie Poetics of Culture und New Historicism (ein in den amerikanischen Literaturwissenschaften entworfenes Programm) untersucht: Medizin und Literatur (in diesem Falle) beeinflussen und bedingen sich gegenseitig, und haben gemeinsam den Diskurs der Hysterie hervorgebracht. Beispielsweise benutzte Freud hermeneutische Arbeitsweisen, die auch in der Literaturwissenschaft benutzt werden, um die Trume und 'Geschichten' seiner Patienten zu analysieren. Er greift auf literarische Werke zurck (beispielsweise Sophokles' Knig dipus), um seine Theorie zu erklren und Charcot beeinflussten unter anderem die Darstellungen von dmonischer Besessenheit in der Kunst des Mittelalters.
