Personale Identitt kann nach Hume auf zweierlei Arten verstanden werden. Einerseits kann es sich um personale Identitt in Bezug auf unsere thought and imagination' handeln und andrerseits um personale Identitt in Bezug auf unsere passions and the concern we take in ourselves' (T 253). Sowohl in dieser Arbeit als auch im Of personal identity' betitelten Paragraphen in Humes Treatise geht es blo um erstere Auffassung, der zufolge Hume eine bestimmte Konzeption des Geistes liefert. Ausgehend von der Kritik an die Konzeption eines einfachen und zeitbergreifend identischen Selbst, versucht Hume eine alternative Konzeption des Geistes zu liefern: die sogenannte Bndeltheorie des Selbst. Die Merkmale des Geistes als Bndel stehen in diametralen Gegensatz zu den Merkmalen der Einheit und Identitt des von ihm kritisierten Selbst. Wenngleich sich Hume im Abschnitt zur personalen Identitt vorwiegend mit dem Problem der Identitt befasst, wird es in dieser Arbeit um das Problem der Einheit des Selbst gehen. Die zentrale Frage bei Hume ist, wie wir dazu kommen, dem Geist Einheit zuzuschreiben. Seine Perspektive ist, dem Vorhaben des Treatise gem, psychologisch. Hume wird aber die Einheit die wir unserem Geist bzw. unserem Bewusstsein zuschreiben nicht erklren knnen. Das ist mit einer besonderen Inkonsistenz seiner Theorie zu begrnden. Gegenstand vorliegender Arbeit ist es, eine Darstellung und Diskussion der Thesen und Probleme, aber auch der mglichen Aussichten von Humes Bndeltheorie des Selbst so wie sie im Abschnitt Of personal identity' dargestellt ist zu liefern. Dabei wird gelegentlich Bezug auf zeitgenssische Rezeptionen von Humes These genommen.
