About the Author Hippolyte Jean Giraudoux est un crivain et un diplomate franais, n le 29 octobre 1882 Bellac dans la HauteVienne et mort le 31 janvier 1944 Paris. Brillant tudiant et soldat dcor pendant la Premire Guerre mondiale, il occupe des fonctions diplomatiques et administratives tout en crivant des romans (Suzanne et le Pacifique en 1921, Siegfried et le Limousin en 1922) avant de se diriger vers le thtre aprs sa rencontre avec le comdien Louis Jouvet qui mettra en scne et interprtera ses uvres principales. Il est aujourd'hui surtout connu pour son thtre qui compte des pices clbres comme Amphitryon 38 (1929), La guerre de Troie n'aura pas lieu (1935), lectre (1937) ou Ondine (1939) ou La Folle de Chaillot joue en 1945 aprs sa mort. Jean Giraudoux a particip comme d'autres dramaturges des annes 19301940 (Cocteau, Anouilh, Sartre, Camus par exemple) la rcriture des mythes antiques clairs par les mentalits modernes. Il a su allier fantaisie potique et got pour les images insolites et galement associer le tragique et le lger dans une langue lgante et fine, parfois mme potique comme dans Intermezzo ou Ondine. Germanophile et diplomate de carrire, il est Commissaire gnral l'information en 19391940 et pendant l'Occupation sa situation est complexe et son rle contrast. Jean Giraudoux meurt Paris le 31 janvier 1944, l'ge de soixante et un ans, la suite d'une intoxication alimentaire ou d'une inflammation du pancras. L'ensemble de ses 16 pices a t l'affiche du Thtre du NordOuest Paris pendant l'anne 2012 l'occasion d'un festival Giraudoux (affiche cicontre).
