The 'Ideas' department was one of the most popular features of NCTM's Arithmetic Teacher: Mathematics Education through the Middle Grades journal. Early in the development of 'Ideas,' the lessons focused on creative paperandpencil activities, but as the reform movement in mathematics education began, the use of manipulatives became an important part of the lessons. Starting in 1989, the lessons incorporated communication, connections, reasoning, and problem solving. This collection of fortyfive classroomready activities has been compiled from the 1991 1994 Arithmetic Teacher journals. The 'Ideas' lessons incorporate communication, connections, reasoning, and problem solving, and a reference page relates the activities to specific NCTM Standards.
