Es stellt eine eigenartige Verbindung von Stabilitt formaler demokratischer Prinzipien insbesondere regelmiger Wahlen , wie sie wohl in wenigen ehemaligen Kolonien vorzufinden ist, einerseits und einer relativ autoritren Machtausbung durch die Regierung andererseits dar. Oft wird auf Singapur der Ausdruck des sanften Autoritarismus' angewandt, denn trotz der sehr weitreichenden Eingriffe des Staates in das Leben der Menschen erreicht die Regierung seit fast einem halben Jahrhundert bei den regulr und nach demokratischen Prinzipien ablaufenden Wahlen eine absolute Mehrheit, die auf eine grundstzliche Zustimmung der Bevlkerung zur Staatsfhrung hinzuweisen scheint. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es aufzuzeigen, wie dieser Grundkonsens zwischen Regierung und Regierten zustande kam und wie er sich im Laufe der Jahre weiterentwickelte. Nach einem kurzen Abriss ber die Geschichte Singapurs von der Kolonialzeit bis zur Unabhngigkeit im Jahre 1965 soll insbesondere soll gezeigt werden, wie die Regierung ihre Herrschaftsideologie propagierte und wie sie auf den Legitimationsverlust dieser Ideologie in den achtziger und neunziger Jahren mit dem Versuch der Schaffung einer einheitlichen Zivilreligion und mit nderungen am politischen System reagierte. Ein kurzer Ausblick schliet die Arbeit ab.
