Il cinghiale seduto e innocuo, la cui rara iconografia qui esaminata con persuasive osservazioni, un simbolo fiorentino da quando l'originale marmoreo, venuto da Roma, fu incorporato nella rassegna di prestigiose antichit del duca Cosimo e diede spunto a varie rielaborazioni artistiche e memoriali. Il porcellino rappresenta, insieme al leone Marzocco, un autentico totem della citt di Firenze. Lo testimonia anche il restauro, nel 2010, del Cinghiale marmoreo antico esposto nella testata del terzo corridoio degli Uffizi: ben modellato in marmo greco e finemente scolpito nelle setole del pelame ispido, il porco cignale (Vasari) ispiratore di tutti gli altri viene considerato dagli esperti un scultura greca autentica, risalente al III secolo a.C. I saggi, esaurienti e brillanti, valorizzano anche il lavoro recentemente svolto dall'Opificio delle Pietre Dure sui due basamenti, secentesco e ottocentesco, che sono ognuno un'opera d'arte: quello di Pietro Tacca, mirabilmente intonato alla temperie di alleanza fra arte e botanica che aveva nella corte medicea uno scenario privilegiato, e quello di Giovanni Benelli che, vedendo male l'originale incrostato e consunto, si sent libero di completarlo e arricchirlo, creando una sorta di reintepretazione nell'attualissimo linguaggio del naturalismo.
