This book is a further recognition of the artist as a partner in the making of fine books for children. It marks the progress made in the expansive years from 1946 through 1956 and illumines present tendencies in illustrating. Marcia Brown, Lynd Ward and Fritz Eichenberg, who contribute the three summarizing chapters for the period, are themselves distinguished illustrators and practitioners of the graphic arts. This volume brings up to date the biographies and bibliographies of all the outstanding artists active in this field a compilation begun in "Contemporary Illustrators of Children's Books" (1930), continued and expanded in "Illustrators of Children's Books, 17441945," both under the same editorial supervision.
